Chapter Fifteen
Kate came to a sudden halt. âPerry! What are you doing here?â
He dismounted, looping the reins over the horseâs head. âI came to see how you and Ivy were settling in, and to make sure you wanted for nothing. I feel I havenât done enough for either of you, especially my cousinâs children.â
âYou neednât worry about them. Ivy seems happy enough and she gets on well with Mrs Boggis, the housekeeper. The children are having a wonderful time and they have roses in their cheeks, even after such a short time.â
âIâm delighted to hear it. Is there anywhere I can leave Tarquin?â
âYes, the stables are at the far end of the house. Iâll show you.â Kate fell into step beside him. âGoodfellow is still here, but Lady Lyndon sent Warrender back to Finsbury Circus. Goodfellow will look after your horse.â She shot him a curious glance. âHow did you find us? No one was supposed to know where weâd gone.â
âHarry told me where to find you. Only a few people know about this country estate.â
âYou knew his true identity all along?â
âI wouldnât take on a client without going into their background, Kate.â
They came to a halt outside the stables, and Goodfellow emerged from the coach house.
âLook after my horse, if you please, Goodfellow,â Perry said, handing him the reins. âIâll stay long enough to give him a rest before returning to London.â
âAye, sir. Your horse will be all right with me.â Goodfellow led Tarquin into the stable.
Kate started off in the direction of the house. âYouâre welcome to stay for the night, Perry. Iâm sure we have room for one more, and you might be able to bridge the gap between Mama and Lady Lyndon.â
He eyed her curiously. âThey donât get on well?â
âYou could say that, although Iâm afraid itâs my mother whoâs at fault. She simply refuses to have anything to do with Lady Lyndon or Annie, and having Ivyâs children in the house isnât helping.â
He chuckled. âIâm not sure I can do anything, but Iâm willing to try.â
âHave you met Harryâs mother?â
âNo, I havenât.â
âSheâs a delightful lady.â Kate came to a halt on the terrace at the back of the house. She perched on the balustrade where the twins had abandoned their attempts at making daisy chains. âBefore we go indoors and I make the necessary introductions, please tell me why you came here today. What did Harry say to you?â
Perry stood with his hands clasped behind his back as he gazed into the distance. âThis is a splendid old house. Iâd take bets on the fact that youâre planning improvements both inside and outside.â
âDonât change the subject, Perry. The house doesnât belong to me, although I do hate to see the garden in such a state, but weâll only be here for a short time. Please answer my question â what did Harry say?â
âHe wants you to remain here for an indefinite period. I canât say more than that because Iâm not party to his dealings with the Metropolitan Police.
